Financial and personal identifiable information (PII) in today’s market is a valuable commodity. It should be an ever-growing concern for the confidentiality of our data. Carbon Black’s research team has discovered this after viewing marketplaces on the dark web.

The information for sale ranges from:

  • W-2 & 1040 forms                                ($1.04 to $52)
  • Birthdates, Names, and SSNs         ($0.19 to $62)

Aside from the actual data being sold, products and services to acquire this data are being sold as well. As the demand increases, there will become a wider and more diverse set of products and services available. This enables even inexperienced hackers to partake in this activity.

With these threats on the rise, it is imperative to be mindful of our data. This means to be careful of whom you give your information, how you send information, and to monitor your information.

This can be done through requesting a free credit report annually and checking your monthly bank & credit card statements. These steps will not protect you completely, but they will shed a lot of light on what is going on with your finances allowing you to have more control over them.
